That difference is worth understanding. Aspen gets the most snow, so weight on the structure is the headline risk. Lower down the valley, total snowfall drops but daytime temperatures cross 32°F far more often — and repeated freeze-thaw is precisely the mechanism that builds an ice dam. A mild winter in Glenwood Springs can produce worse ice dams than a heavy one in Aspen.
The core market and the reason the design numbers are what they are — the City of Aspen's amended climatic table sets a ground snow load of 100 pounds per square foot and requires ice shield underlayment. Complex rooflines, steep pitches and a great many homes that sit empty for stretches.
Higher and snowier than Aspen proper, with a housing stock heavy on condominiums, duplexes and large single-family homes on steep sites. Shared roofs and lower roofs beneath larger ones make snow retention a frequent conversation.
Just down-valley from Aspen along the Roaring Fork. A mix of older structures and newer custom homes on larger parcels, where access and driveway length are usually the scheduling constraint.
Spread along Snowmass Creek and the highway corridor. Rural parcels, long driveways and outbuildings — barns, shops and garages are often the structures carrying the most unmanaged snow.
Lower elevation than Aspen, so less total snowfall — but more freeze-thaw cycling, which is what actually builds ice dams. Basalt sees ice dam calls in seasons when Aspen simply stays frozen.
Adjacent to Basalt in the mid-valley. Similar freeze-thaw pattern, with a housing stock that includes a lot of moderate-pitch roofs where snow neither sheds cleanly nor drains quickly.
Mid-valley at the foot of Mount Sopris. Less snow than up-valley, but the same freeze-thaw ice dam pattern, and older housing stock where attic insulation and ventilation are frequently the root cause.
The bottom of the valley at the Colorado River confluence. Lowest snowfall in the service area and the most freeze-thaw — roof snow load is rarely the issue here, ice dams routinely are.
If you are in the valley and not on this list, call anyway. Coverage past Glenwood Springs and over the passes depends on conditions and the time of year, and during a heavy storm cycle scheduling everywhere reflects travel time.
